For those just starting, our entry-level course lays a solid foundation in the basics of powder mixing and blending. Students will learn about the different types of powders used in solid dose manufacturing, the properties that affect their behavior in mixtures, and the fundamental principles of homogeneity and stability. Through hands-on training, participants will operate various mixers and blenders, understanding their applications, benefits, and limitations.
You will feel comfortable with basic tablet and capsule formulation, focusing on direct compression. You will understand the root cause of issues that present in manufacturing and how they might be addressed.

In the advanced level, the course involves more complex aspects of powder formulation, including granulation techniques, particle size distribution, and the impact of moisture and other environmental factors on powder flow. SDU’s advanced class also introduces students to the critical concepts of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and how to ensure product consistency and quality in every batch. Practical sessions at this stage emphasize the optimization of mixing parameters to achieve the desired product specifications. In this course, the students will have access to fluid bed granulators and roller compactors and explore the basics of making a granulate.
You will be able to identify when a powder needs to be granulated or agglomerated to be used efficiently in a solid dose formulation. You will have a strong understanding of the tools available to overcome powder issues and the advantages of each of them.

For those aiming to reach a master level in powder formulation, this master class explores the state-of-the-art technologies in powder mixing and the latest advancements in formulation science. Students will engage in sophisticated projects, such as designing formulations with controlled-release properties, enhancing bioavailability, and incorporating novel excipients. The hands-on workshops provide opportunities to troubleshoot complex formulation challenges and innovate solutions using the top equipment in the industry.
You will be able to make a solid dose product that can perform its function, including timed release, targeted release and multi-stage release. You will understand how formulation affects the desirability of a drug and when tablet coatings should be used to achieve the desired results.
Completion of SDU’s 402 powder formulation class.
